Street Hawker hit by BRT Bus while making an attempt to escape from KAI officials

Lagos – No fewer than 20 BRT buses were vandalized by suspected touts and area boys around Ikorodu road in Maryland, Lagos, on Wednesday, June 29, following the crushing to death of a street hawker by a BRT bus driver near along the road.

Independent gathered that officials of the Kick Against Indiscipline, (KAI), on operation clean-up Lagos streets of hawkers arrived Ikorodu road early and began to chase away hawkers who were selling their wares along the street.

One of the male hawkers, whose name could not be ascertained  as at the time of filling this report was said to have ran into the BRT lane, near Idioroko bus-stop, Maryland, Lagos,  in an attempt to escape from the wrath of the KAI official when he was crushed to dear by an on-coming BRT bus.

Angered by the incident, suspected area boys and touts were said to have capitalized on it to vandalize blue BRT busses plying the Ikorodu road, even as some BRT buses from various parts of Lagos had to disappear from the streets.

A resident of Palmgrove told our correspondent on phone that no fewer than 10 people may have been feared killed and several critically injured following the protest, which caught the police unaware.

Tunde Lasisi, Public Relations Officer, Kick Against Indiscipline refused to comment on the incident, saying that he has been re-deploy from KAI office to another ministry.

According to our source, the situation could have been worst bet not for the timely intervention of police officers from the Rapid Response Squad as well as OP MENSA soldiers, who were called in to salvage the situation.
But, a petty trader at Maryland told our correspondent on condition of anonymity that there are indications that no fewer than 10 persons may have been feared killed.
Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos state police command, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police, could not be reached as at the time of filling this report, as she did not pick her calls.
